Black screen after clicking play on launcher

Post by martinigirl15 on Wed 06 Feb 2013, 00:57

I tried to install the Ultimate Fix, but I must have done it wrong because my game wouldn't open--first it would just go to a black screen once I clicked "play" on the launcher, and then it would give me some debugging message when I tried to even open the launcher itself. I got nervous and didn't want to go any further with trying to figure out what happened, so I just uninstalled and then reinstalled the base game and my expansion packs. Now, even after reinstallation, I still get a black screen.

Since the launcher might be the problem, I tried to go into my /bin folder to see if I could open the game directly. However, "TS3EP04.exe" is a self-extracting archive file, and when I click it my computer says it can't unzip it. Are these files supposed to be zipped? If so, how do I unzip them, and if not, how do I fix this?

For the record, "TS3W.exe" is also a zipped file.

Hello,

No, they shouldn't be zipped. There's obviously something messed up there.
Can you please post a screenshot of the folder with the zipped TS3W.exe file? You're probably running the wrong .exe file.

You might want to start here: http://games4theworld.bestgoo.com/t1171-must-read-how-to-install-the-sims-3-correctly
DO NOT skip any steps and re-download both the manual patch and the Ultimate Fix!

Hello,

Oh, I see you're on a Mac. I'm sorry, I do not have enough Mac knowledge to be able to help you.
I've moved this topic to the correct section, please wait for a reply from someone else.

If the launcher is giving you problems, you can try bypassing it. Try this:

1. Hold down "Control" and click on The Sims 3 Base Game, and select "Show Contents"

2. Go into the "Contents" folder and find the flie named "index.plist."

3. Hold down "Control," go to "Open With" and open it with Text Edit (or whatever text editor you want to use).

4.
You'll see a lot of text, but look for the line right below
"CedegaGameName" - it should start with "C:\Program Files/Electronic
Arts" and so on. There are going to be TWO lines that show this, but
you're looking for the one that ENDS with "S3Launcher.exe." Check out
the screenshot below to see what I mean (I use a different Text Editor but you should see almost the same thing if you use Text Edit).

5. Highlight "S3Launcher" and change it to "TS3W," so that the line ends with "TS3W.exe."

6. Save the changes to the file, and close Text Edit.

7. Launch The Sims 3 now and you should go straight into the game, without having to start it from the launcher.

This is what I do if my launcher acts up, and it should fix the problem as long as it's only the Launcher itself that's causing the issues. Don't worry about the .exe files being zipped - they look weird on a Mac so ignore them. Let me know if this helps, and good luck!
