On PC, no load...on weak laptop, no problem??? [SOLVED]

Post by sage on Thu 23 May 2013, 02:44

Hi there! New poster but longtime devotee of the Sims! I recently reinstalled my Sims 3 game. But it won't load. I have tried EVERYTHING I can find online, including this site's instructions, to get it to work. Nothing!

It opens the launcher, i click 'play' and then it either goes to black for a couple of seconds then returns to my desktop, or freezes on black! That's it! Nothing I have tried gets beyond that!

For some reason, my Sims 2 game (which I reinstalled today out of boredom after my Sims 3 wouldn't play) won't play either now.

However, even weirder, my weak, beat-up, old laptop runs Sims 3. It loads up! What the H*ll??

Anybody have some advice? Please? I've tried everything!

I'm tempted to ask whether you PC is compatible with the game...
Is your graphic card up to date?

Then ask. Otherwise you're just taking guesses at what the problem might be...

OP, can you type down your PC's configuration? (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS)

Hello,

To begin with, have a look at this article here: http://games4theworld.bestgoo.com/t857-the-sims-3-crashes-freezes-to-desktop-fix-updated-on-29-09-2012

And if you say you re-installed your game: did it actually work sometime in the past ? In case of doubt about your System requirements, read this article here: http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:TS3_System_Requirements

I think some people are NOT paying attention to what I
wrote. I said that the game worked fine before...so yes, it is compatible with
this computer.

I tried the link…still nothing.

I just wanted to rule that theoretical possibility out. But this is not important now.
A few other possibilities you might want to consider:

1) Do you still have your "user data" (a.k.a "The Sims 3"-folder, located in My documents/Electronic Arts) installed, maybe from the last time when your game was still working ? If you do have such a folder, then rename it in any way you like (e.g. "The Sims 3_"). Then try starting the game again.

2) What happens if you go to Program files(x86)/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Game/Bin and try starting the game by double-clicking on the "TS3W.exe" file ?

3) Right-click on that "TS3W.exe", go to "Properties" and select "Run in compatibility mode...Windows XP". Also try to right-click on that file and "run as Administrator".

4) Lower the resolution of your computer screen, then try starting the game.

5) And of course: I assume you have all the latest Windows updates installed ?

If none of the above helps, I suggest you properly uninstall the game. For a start, you can have a look at this article here: http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:TS3_Uninstall
I recommend deleting the registry keys manually, by the way. And then re-install the game again.

Please try and be nice, we're volunteering to help you here, and since you don't give us much info, we're bound to ask for the most common errors...
Still, what about your graphic card?
Since your Sims 2 game doesn't work anymore either, it might be your PC who's at fault... Except if you touched the game since (installed mods or CC).

Was your previous install (the one that worked) a "complete" set of the sims, and how exactly did you uninstall it? Although you aren't getting any errors with this (that you've told us, anyways) there could be something weird happening in the registry from the past install.

Everybody already knows that, but like I told the Helper, if you don't tell us what you're actually running your game on the only option left is to take guesses, which rarely actually solves the problem.

I've owned PC's that were "compatible" with certain games for some time and then stopped working out of the blue. Why? Well the first time it was because I had a crappy outdated ATi card that required daily updates... Another time my CPU functioned at such high temperature due to the games I ran on it that eventually it ether got damaged or a new update forced it to run at lower capacity rendering the games unplayable... Another time one of my memory cards got clogged due to a power surge that occurred while I was running a game waaay over my PC's gaming capacity (even though the game was "compatible"), and so on...

This stuff happens.

Was talking to a friend. She explained to me why the drivers need to be updated. I had heard people say 'check that your drivers are up to date' but I had thought that if the game had worked before, it would work now. Apparently, I was wrong. I updated the video driver...game works!
Thanks for all your help!

Helper edit: Good to hear that. OK, topic closed.
