WinZip Registry Optimizer says "DOH!"

Post by Cellitha on Sat 08 Jun 2013, 00:38

Hi, ya'll!

A while ago I posted about a problem regarding my computer blacking out during gaming:
http://games4theworld.bestgoo.com/t10023-game-crashes-screen-turns-black-and-the-computer-won-t-react-solved.
I thought I had solved it, but no.
Anyways, I found this thread with someone having the exact same problem I'm having:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/340535-31-black-screen-sound-skipping-computer-freeze

Someone in that thread suggests downloading WinZip Registry Optimizer. The OP says he did and that the optimizer found not one, but eighteen, errors within his registry.
"Sounds legit", I thought to my self, so I did as I have done before; I CCleaned my computer, ran avast! AND Windows Defender, ran a defrag on both C:\\ and D:\\ - and then I also did this new thing and downloaded the WinZip RegOpt.

Remember how that other guy raised his eyebrows at eighteen errors in total? Well, my search showed a result of FRIGGING 261!

The Free program only repairs 15 of them, then it says I have to buy. I don't wanna!
My question to you, all you computer-knowers out there, is simple - is WinZip RegOpt trustworthy, or is it just bullshitting me to get me to pay up?
And, off course, is there an other, free alternative?

Hello there,

Well, if you ask me, all that kind of software is crap. Those "problems" aren't actually problems. And no, it'll not speed up your PC removing unnecessary registry values. CCleaner does all that stuff for free, let's keep it that way.
The shareware programs you name just make it sounds worse than it actually is, so you'll buy their software.

Anyhow, you're on a PC, right? Not a laptop?

Hello,

Do you have any anti-virus software? If yes, which one do you use?

As listed above I've used Windows Defender and avast! to search for viruses, so those are the ones I have and use. =)

Along with the black out-error I've also been having a problem with time freezing. This means the sims freezes and I can't click anything, or push the screen, but some other animations such as the green cursor keeps spinning, the snow/rain keeps falling, the wind keeps blowing etc. (no, this is not a bad attempt at poetry). This lasts for about ten second (tooo loooong!), and though it always comes out of it, it can occur every five seconds or so - very annoying.
I googled it (hurray for internet!) and found something that at least seem to fix this glitch, which MIGHT have something to do with the screen blacking out and all. It seems that the glitch can be solved, at least temporarly, by while in game, press Control+Shift+C to bring up the code console then type in "resetsim *" (with the space and the *, as the * mark indicates every sim in town).

I just used it and it seems to work...and I actully quit the game the right way this time! =D
We'll see how long it lasts....

Hello there,

This doesn't only happen when you play the game, right?
Download this .ISO file, please: http://rescuedisk.kaspersky-labs.com/rescuedisk/updatable/kav_rescue_10.iso

Burn it to a CD and then reboot your PC and boot from the disc. From there, update the AV's engines and then run a scan.
It can take up to 10 hours, if you have a lot of files on your PC. But generally it's finished within a few hours. You can let it do its job overnight.

See if it finds any viruses. If yes, remove them.
