Unable to create a restore point!

Post by scarletrose on Tue 19 Nov 2013, 06:09

Hi guys,

I've stumbled upon a problem after fixing the last problem, system restore now fails to work, my previous restore points were removed when I turned system protection off, now once it is back on when I try to create a restore point I get this error:

Any suggestions? D:

Hello there,

Try this: right-click on that folder and go to "Properties". Go to the "Sharing"-tab and click on the button "Advanced sharing". Mark the box "Share this folder".

Now, click on the "Permissions"-button. Mark the box "Full Control". Click on Apply, then OK. Close all remaining windows that way.

See if that works and let us know the result. Good luck ! Smile

Repeat the process for the C: drive (right-click, go to properties, etc.), but also for ALL sub-folders you want to change permissions for.

Alright, then. Wat.

Try this: go to the System Control Panel.

Then System and Security > System > System Protection (that's on the left). In the window, under "Protection settings", click on the "Configure"-button. Mark the option "turn off system protection" and confirm it in the following window. Then click again on Apply, then OK, and so on.

If THAT doesn't help either, then I'm running out of ideas.

You might want to give Narong's suggestion in the following topic a try: http://games4theworld.bestgoo.com/t12144-unlocker-how-to-delete-file-folder-that-system-preventing-you-from-delete

Other than that, I'm unsure. Maybe another Mod/Helper knows more about this. What I've suggested at first seems to work with The Sims (3) games, but not here...indeed, try Narongs tip.

Good luck !

Sadly I've already tried it, and when I press delete it does nothing at all... WhatDidUJustCallMe?  Thanks for your help anyway Very Happy I'll just wait and see if any of the other mods know.

::EDIT:: Now I'm having further problems with system restore not allowing me to create a manual restore point.... The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again error code (0x81000101)

So now I can't even create a manual restore point or backup any of my system files WhatDidUJustCallMe?

I would strongly suggest getting Malwarebytes because reading through this thread about your issue, really does scream trojan/malware alerts!  If you're administrator, you should be able to delete a folder.  Your PC also seems to be throwing out random errors, too, which also seems fishy.  Are you running Vista or Win7?

First I would do this:

  1. Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Under Group or user names, click your name to see the permissions you have.
Then:

  1. Click Edit and then click to check the check boxes for the permissions that you need and then click OK.

If that doesn't work, you may have to boot your system up in safe mode and see if you can delete it then.  Also, check to make sure McAfee isn't blocking you from deleting it.  I'd suggest you disable "McAfee McShield" and attempt to do deleting.

Thanks for the help & suggestions, I've been able to fix the issue by booting into safe mode and changing the name/deleting it!

My next more concerning issue is my system restore not working, everytime I try to make a manual restore point I get this error:

Hi scarletrose,
1. Do you have any security software installed on the computer?
2.Are any third party backup programs installed on your computer?

Verify if these two services are started and running on your computer. If it’s not started, start the services and check if you can create a system restore point.

a) Volume Shadow Copy service
b) Windows backup

Also ensure that their dependency services are running.
Verify if their dependency services are running.

You can check this information from services.msc. To do this follow the steps below:

1. Go to start and type services.msc in the search field.
2. Locate the two services.
3. Right-Click on the service one at a time.
4. Select properties.
5. Go to Dependencies Tab.
6. Note the dependency services.
7. Make sure the two services are running.
8. To start a service, right click on it and select start.

You can also try turning off system restore for the hard disk on which Windows is installed and turning it back on.

Hello,

I strongly suspect there is something wrong with user profile (since you mentioned before there is a trojan or something in your pc?). To test out with user profile,

First of all, you need to create a new user profile:

1. Go to Control Panel >> User Accounts and Family Safety >> User Accounts.
2. Click Manage another account. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Click Create a new account.
4. Type the information in the fields (username, password...).

After that you need to copy files to new user profile:
1. Log on as the old user.
2. Open My Documents.
3. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. (If you don't see it, press ALT)
4. Click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, uncheck the Hide protected operating system files box, and then click OK.
5. Locate the C:\Users\(Old Username) folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed. Old Username is the one you use frequently.
6. Select all of the files and folders in this folder, except the following files:
1) Ntuser.dat
2) Ntuser.dat.log
3) Ntuser.ini
7. Click the Edit menu, and then click Copy. (If you don't see the Edit menu, press ALT)
8. Locate the C:\Users\(New Username) folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed, and New Username is the name of the new user profile you created.
9. Click the Edit menu, and then click Paste. (If you don't see the Edit menu, press ALT)
10. Log off, and then log back on as the new user.
11. Try the system restore again.

I found the trojan and removed it, pretty sure it was a false positive because  my anti virus often detects .exe's as virus's.  I'm sort of vigilant creating a new user profile as i've only got a few GBs left on my SSD.

Any other suggestions before I try something like this?

You can check to see if the 2 services I mentioned before are set to "Automatic", and thus eliminating the error.

To do so,

1. Open Services.msc as I have told you to do in my first reply.
2. See if the two services are set in Automatic.
3. If not, right-click the services. Choose Properties.
4. At Startup type, choose Automatic.
5. Retry the system restore.

I know these errors are nasty, but I will walk you through it.

Okay thanks.  I've tried this and both of them are set to automatic.  However after trying to create a restore point the volume shadow copy service stops working and states 'stopping' as its status...

Here: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/.

But I seriously it will do much since system restore are like an other functions (like defragmentation). They use the same system with different software and possibly make a few changes to the system. But bascially they are using the same one, so... you might get the same error.

I've installed this program and when I click it, it launches but fails to work, and by fails to work I mean nothing happens at all, I wait and wait and nothing happens, one assumes the program might be attempting to use the services which I'm having trouble with.  I'm out of ideas.  Anyone else have a suggestion on how to fix system restore? Kinda desperate right now, especially since other backup software is failing to work as well.

Can you post the screenshot I have requested? This can definitely help solve the problem.

Either way, I found a solution on the Internet (because I am running out of ideas. You don't even accept the second solution Wat.):

1. Run regedit.exe and navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SPP"
2. Create a new Registry value of type DWORD with name "CreateTimeout"
3. Change value to 12000000(2*10*60*1000 = 20 mins) in decimal

Hope that helps you. Otherwise, I don't know what can be done to solve this. Maybe another helper/Moderator/Admin can help.

Sorry, A screen shot of what?

I'm trying this method now, fingers crossed it helps.
:EDIT: Hmm system restore has been trying to 'create a restore point' for about the last 20 minutes.  Think it's safe to say it's not going to work lol.

Any other suggestions? Still not solved.

@scarletrose wrote:Okay thanks.  I've tried this and both of them are set to automatic.  However after trying to create a restore point the volume shadow copy service stops working and states 'stopping' as its status...
