Restaurant Empire 2 Mouse Issue

Post by ziechael on Mon 31 Mar 2014, 22:08

Hi, first off great site!

I am running Restaurant Empire 2 on a mac via virtual box with vista loaded on it. The game installs and runs fine but at the main menu the mouse clicks don't register, the cursor moves fine but no clicky clicky.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello there and welcome,

Thank you for the nice words ! Smile  As for your problem, it sounds a bit weird. At first I would have guessed this is NOT related to the game, but rather to your virtual machine and/or its configuration settings, but let's see.

Do you actually have the same issue with other games/software in that virtual machine ? And what virtual machine are you actually using ?

Next, if your mouse is a USB mouse, have you tried plugging it into another USB port ?

This is a whole new problem for me, as a mac user i'm used to having to take the long way round either with cider/wineskin or virtual box (i even dabbled with bootcamp for a while but my machine is limited on space, stupid work issue MBAir!). Problems in the past relate to graphical limitations, missing system files and/or sheer reluctant games.

However, when they have worked they've worked fine. I use oracle virtual box version 4.3.10 running Vista 32bit (SP2 i believe, off the top of my head).

That was my first thought, i tried all usb ports including the ones on my keyboard and usb hub but no joy. The trackpad also moved the cursor but recorded no clicks. I've also tried a full reinstall to see if it was an issue from then but with the cursor working i thought it unlikely.

I appreciate this isn't technically a pc problem because of the way i'm running it but thanks for taking the time to help.

You're welcome - and yes, you actually mentioned in the first post that you were using VirtualBox; I must have overlooked that.  Facepalm

The downside is that both my theories don't seem to "work" here; do you still have the original .RAR file of Restaurant Empire Tycoon ? If so, there should be a sub-folder inside named "DirectX9", please extract that folder somewhere onto your virtual machine. Inside that folder, you should then see a "dxsetup.exe" file, so double-click on it and follow the on-screen instructions.

After it is finished, re-start the game and see if there's any improvement. This thing with the DirectX might be a bit far-fetched, but let's see.

Next, does it make any difference if you right-click on the game .exe file and choose "run as Administrator" ? Also, can you modify the properties of the game's .exe file and change the compatibility to Windows XP (SP 3) ? These are "dirty workarounds" basically, but still worth a try.

You might even try un-installing the game, then powering off the virtual machine, then powering on again, and re-install that game.

If I remember anything else, I'll get back to you; in the meantime, you might want to turn on e-mail notifications for this topic, so that you receive an e-mail, should anyone reply to this topic (in your profile options, under "Preferences", choose "always notify me of replies ----> Yes").

//EDIT

Since you're emulating a "Windows environment" this section of the forum is OK, in my opinion.

I instructed the installation process to install dx9 first time around but tried to do it as a stand alone program as suggested... no joy Sad

Carlos wrote:Next, does it make any difference if you right-click on the game .exe file and choose "run as Administrator" ?
This is my usual go-to solution for any program giving me problems... no joy Sad

Carlos wrote:Also, can you modify the properties of the game's .exe file and change the compatibility to Windows XP (SP 3) ?
For some reason i only have up until SP2 for XP compatibility which is its default... so no joy Sad

Carlos wrote:You might even try un-installing the game, then powering off the virtual machine, then powering on again, and re-install that game.
And..........

........no joy lol, same problem replicated upon reinstallation.

Thanks yet again for your suggestions Carlos (and don't worry, i always set any thread in any forum i start to instant notifications, the only thing slowing me down is the time difference)

While you formulate plan B... (or is it C now?) i'll continue my world wide search for answers, including from the VB community. For reference i did find a question someone had asked on yahoo answers which, on the google search page, had the same issue as me... but naturally upon clicking to visit the page it had been deleted due to some inappropriate posts or something or other. Gah!

Do you happen to know if "Guest additions" is installed in your Virtual Machine OS ? If I'm not mistaken, you'll find a VBoxGuestAdditions.iso in the program files folder of VirtualBox (C:\Program files(x86)\Oracle\VirtualBox). For installing that addition, refer, for example to this guide here:

https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#additions-windows

Other than that, I may continue thinking about this problem, still. Would you try, if possible, going a "different route" with that game ? I.e. using WINE, if possible ? You might even ask a friend or relative who has a "proper" Windows installation, to install that game on his/her computer.

My experience with VirtualBox is actually limited; I once used VirtualBox and installed Mac OS X 10.8.2 ("Mountain lion") as a guest system on my Windows 7 desktop machine. The idea was to get a first feeling for that OS, but due to time pressures I had to put this experimenting to a hiatus, basically. I may or may not pick up again on it. But what I did see was that virtual machines are highly unpractical. Yes, it's good when you just want to get a first glimpse on another OS; occasionally, it would also make sense if you just want to use several specialized/exclusive apps.

And if you know what you're doing, you might even "test" virusses or other nasty things in a virtual machine, but then again: unless you're a professional and you know what you're doing, you better refrain from doing such experiments.

But other than that I'm not too fond of this idea of using virtual machines, for anything else beyond these things I just mentioned. Because

1) problems with all sorts of drivers seem to be very common with virtual machines. In my case, I couldn't get the sound working.  Facepalm

2) And if you really want to do "regular" gaming on a virtual machine, your host system should be pretty strong (in particular, you'd need at least 6 - 8 GBs of RAM on your host system, at least for more 'contemporary' games, and the CPU should be pretty strong too, preferably a quad-core or better).

I'm actually planning on making a custom-built desktop machine, and choosing the right components in order to be able to install both Mac OS X and Windows on it. And of course, these operating systems *should* run with some sort of stability too. I'm honestly reluctant to pay for overpriced Mac computers (or generally any "Apple" product) if I "just" want to learn how the OS works. Sure, I do think the quality of the products is good, and most Mac users say that Mac OS X is much more stable and reliable than any Windows OS (which, of course, I have no way of confirming that claim). At the end of the day though you'll have to decide if it's really worth it.

As for you, I'd actually recommend you try using this "Bootcamp" thing along with WINE, whenever you can. Again, if I remember anything else, I'll get back to you.
