Can I transfer my Sims 3 game from one computer to another? [SOLVED]

Post by jiae on Wed 26 Nov 2014, 17:10

Hi, I've recently just purchased a new laptop and I was wondering if I could transfer all my Sims 3 files from my desktop to my laptop? I've already installed the sims 3 onto my laptop, What I want to do is transfer my files liked my mods, saved games, and expansions onto this laptop Smile
Like, could I email them to myself or something??

Hello jiae,

You must focus on your folder "The Sims 3", located in Documents/Electronic Arts. So on the one computer that has your mods, savegames and so on, go to that location, and COPY the folder "The Sims 3", for example onto a USB flashdrive or external hard-drive.

And then you must plug that device, which you just used for copying the folder onto, to the other computer. Then you simply copy + paste the folder "The Sims 3" (from the flashdrive/external drive) into the appropriate location of the other computer, Documents/Electronic Arts. If prompted, select "merge folders" and also "copy and replace" for all files.

And that should do, good luck ! Smile

Hi there,

You can use all kinds of methods, if the USB stick method doesn't work for you.
For example, you can pack all the files in a .RAR file and then upload that .RAR file to a website like MEGA.
Then download the file on your other PC and extract the .rar file. Then do as Carlos explained.

Good luck!

You don't have to transfer all the stuff at once ! Do it in steps, if your flashdrive doesn't have enough space; you don't have to buy a new flashdrive necessarily.

Theoretically, you could use a (crossover) LAN cable to connect the two computers; but I guess in your case, it would be better (for me) to suggest using a USB flashdrive. Since the method with the LAN cable will probably only confuse you even more.  Shocked  Very Happy

Only if your USB-flash is REALLY small in terms of filespace, and it would be impractical to "switch" the drive too often between the computers, then yes, it might be worth buying something better.

Isn't that a bit too much of a hassle - compared to transferring the data via USB flashdrive step-by-step ? scratch  OK, if your USB-flashdrive is really small in size, and the folder you need to transfer is huge, then yes, it might be a feasible alternative...

Very Happy

Just providing an alternative method. Razz
If your internet speed is good and the flash drive is (indeed) very small - or if you don't have one at all, which I doubt - then it's worth trying.

Re: Can I transfer my Sims 3 game from one computer to another? [SOLVED]

Post by Sim Architect on Fri 28 Nov 2014, 21:06

If you use a router to access the internet, maybe you can "see" each other computer if they are plugged wiredly or wirelessly to the same network...

Instead of merging the old and new "The Sims 3" folder, I would renew the one you got in your computer as "The Sims 3 - New" or anything else you like, then copy the "The Sims 3" folder from your flashdrive, Google Drive, Mega, DropBox, network etc into your "Electronic Arts" folder, where you will have, then, "The Sims 3 - New" and "The Sims 3" folders.

I tell you that because sometimes mixing old and new Sims 3 folders can cause problems, as I had before...

Your game will always use only "The Sims 3" folder. So, if you want to change to play with the  "The Sims 3 - New" folder for any reason, you just need to rename "The Sims 3" folder to something else, then rename "The Sims 3 - New" back to "The Sims 3" and you will be good. Or, if you don't have anything saved into "The Sims 3 - New", you can just delete it and forget about it once your game is working properly with your saved stuff.

Ah! It won't install any expansions or stuff packs! You need to install each one manually before playing with your game, or you will lose content you had before from those expansions running in your saved games!

Happy simming!

Yes, what Sven said in his post. It's usually better to simply use the whole folder "The Sims 3" (from the old computer), and then transfer it to the other. If you happen to have such a folder already on the new computer, then the safest thing to do (unless you know better) is to rename that one.

Can we consider this issue resolved Jiae or do you need more assistance with that ? Otherwise, I'll close the thread. Smile
