Un-installing The Sims 3 - a reference guide.

Post by The_gh0stm4n on Sun 25 Jan 2015, 10:10

***NOTICE: if you feel you really need to un-install the game manually due to problems, read everything very carefully, even if it's a longer tutorial. There's no point in "rushing" through this, since you will most likely do even more damage to your installation***

Hello all,

In the following I'll outline a checklist on how to properly un-install The Sims 3 (and its expansions/stuffpacks). Smile

Before starting, please make sure to actually back up your folder "The Sims 3", located in (My) Documents/Electronic Arts. It's best to copy the whole folder "The Sims 3" on an external hard-drive for instance, or if you have a big enough USB-flashdrive, you can use that too.

1.) The first thing I recommend is that you get yourself the program "Your Un-installer Pro", which is also available from G4TW, here:
http://games4theworld.org/downloads.html

Installation instructions are included in the download. Note that there are various good un-installation programs, an alternative being "REVO Un-installer". In this guide, I will only mention "Your Un-installer" though, out of ease and simplicity.

After you install that program, the main user interface will look like this:

Note that this is made from my (old) laptop, on which I actually don't have TS3 installed. I will only use these screenshots for illustration. But you get the idea: in the window that I enclosed with a red rectangle, you will see all your installed programs. Select everything about The Sims 3 that you see there, so normally the base game and all expansions/stuffpacks.

If you do NOT see several components which you *think* you have installed (let's say if you don't see the base game of Sims 3) then forget about it, and just go on with what you can see. If you now double-click on a program, you'll get this:

Again, this refers to another program (Audacity, here), but you'll get that with any program which you select in the previous window. Always choose "Super Mode", for each game/expansion. Follow through until the end. And usually, toward the end, registry entries will be found, which you should also delete. Do this procedure with "Super Mode" with all your Sims 3 games.

2.) When you are done, re-boot the computer !

3.) Now to the trickier part: in order to make sure you don't have any remaining registry entries or other files related to TS3, here's a checklist of what you should do now.

4.) Let's open the "Registry editor". In Windows XP, just press the Windows key + R and type regedit, and then hit enter. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8, it's a good idea to do this with administrative priviledges, just to be safe.

In Windows Vista and 7, open the start menu, and in the search box type
regedit. You can now either right-click on the regisry editor logo on top, and choose "run as Administrator". Or you can, after you typed in regedit in the search box, just type and hold CTRL + ALT + ENTER.

In Windows 8, press the Windows key + Q and type regedit. When the registry logo shows up, right-click on it and choose "run as administrator".

Luckily, I don't have to mess with any of these, since I'm running an Administrator account on my Windows 7 (Ultimate), so I only have to do the same as what I mentioned with Windows XP users.

5.) Now let's make a backup of your whole registry, just in case something goes wrong. Right after the registry editor opens up, click on "File", at the top left corner of the screen. Then choose "Export". In the next window that shows up, enter a name for your backup (anything you want basically; but just make sure to clearly "mark" the file, by choosing an appropriate name, so that you can find it later on, more easily). And choose "Save".

6.) Now that you backed up you registry, let's go on with deleting the relevant registry entries. Note that you might not see all of these entries that I'm going to list; that's OK. In that case, just go on with what you can see.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Classes. Inside "Classes", search for the following entries:

.sims3
.sims3pack
sims3
sims3pack

Right-click on these entries and choose "Delete".

If you have a 32-bit Windows, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Electronic Arts. Under "Electronic Arts", you should see a folder named Sims. Right-click on the folder and choose "Delete". Note that if you want to un-install certain expansions only, do not do this; instead, only delete the sub-entries under "Sims" instead. Also note that in 64-bit systems the location is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Wow6432Node -> Electronic Arts.

7.) Next, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Uninstall. In 64-bit systems that would be instead HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Wow6432Node -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Uninstall. Under the "Uninstall"-folder, look for these entries, but be very careful; look exactly at what these entries look like, so that you don't delete the wrong stuff:

8.) Lastly, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software (64-bit users: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Wow6432Node). Look for the folder Sims and delete it straight away. Again, if you only want to delete specific expansions, don't do that, instead only delete the relevant sub-entries under "Sims".

9.) Close the registry editor now. In Windows XP, open any folder, and go to "Extras" at the top taskbar. Choose "folder options" and then go to "View". Mark "show all files" and save the changes.

In Windows Vista and 7 open any folder and click on "Organize" at the top left. Choose "Folder and search options". And under "View" choose "show hidden files/folder/drives". As for Windows 8, I might provide the information sometime else, since I currently have no access to a Windows 8 computer, nor do I have much practical experience with it (I can't even say I like Windows 8 too much Very Happy ). If anybody of you wants to provide the information on how to show hidden files in Windows 8, feel free to PM me though, so that I may add that to this guide later on.

10.) Navigate to C:\Program files(x86)\InstallShield Installation Information. Delete all of the following folders, or - if you only want to un-install certain expansions - only those that you want to remove:

{C05D8CDB-417D-4335-A38C-A0659EDFD6B8} The Sims 3 (base game !)

11.) If you have Windows Vista, 7 or 8, navigate to C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages.

And also to C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\VirtualStore\Program files(x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Pacakges.

In these locations, check if there is anything related to The Sims 3. If yes, delete everything, if not, it's fine too.

12.) Finally, go to C:\Program files(x86)\Electronic Arts and delete any remaining folders there, that are related to Sims 3.

13.) Now, you may re-boot the computer again, to be safe.

14.) You're done ! Smile  Now The Sims 3 and everything related to it should be removed from your computer. Good luck !
