There.
What he said. Twisted Evil

And you don't really (necessarily) need Daemon Tools.
What I do recommend is things like: Java, Adobe Reader, Flash Player and that kind of stuff.
Other things you might need depend on what you'd like to do with the PC. (Like you'd probably want something like Microsoft Office, and CD/DVD burning software, image editors, game platforms like Steam, etc.)

VLC Media player for video files.

WinAmp for music (if you want the "Pro"-version, google for a keygen/crack).

IrfanView for viewing picture files.

Adobe Photoshop for editing pictures, if you need that (look on the torrent networks for uploads of this).

WinRAR 5.21 for opening .RAR-format archive files.

7-zip for opening .7z-format archive files. -----> Make sure to use WinRAR for .RAR files, and 7-zip for .7z files only !

PowerISO for mounting virtual disc images, because of the program's (relative) simplicity. Look on the torrent networks for any keygens/cracks.

uTorrent, which is still my favorite torrent client, despite going more and more into the 'commercial side' (annoying ads, "premium" offers, etc.)

Microsoft Office, although I mostly use "Word" only. Make sure to turn off your anti-virus systems temporarily, when activating the Office 2013 suite.

Adobe Reader for viewing .pdf files.

Your Un-installer Pro for being able to do proper un-installations of software. Always make sure to use "Super Mode" for un-installing, and re-boot the computer after the un-install with the program is finished !

Spybot Seach & Destroy for basic anti-spyware removal; use the free version.

About anti-virus systems, there are some things to consider. For instance, what are your internet surfing habits ? Do you often visit sites that have a tendency of transmitting nasty stuff (warez, certain torrent networks, p0rn sites, etc.) ? Are you doing online banking transactions ? Do you often work with hard-drives/flashdrives/optical discs from other people, or is your computer connected via LAN to a larger network of computers ? In these cases, you might want to go for an anti-virus program, because the chances of catching malware are (somewhat) higher in these cases. You could of course do without, but then you'll simply need to be careful.

If you decide to go with an anti-virus, I'd suggest either avast or Kaspersky. They both accept user's input (especially important when you configure exclusions), and they don't need as much system resources as other programs (e.g. Norton/Symantec products). But AVG is probably the worst I've encountered, and I'm not sure why so many people are using it. In AVG you have absolutely no control whatsoever and of anything, as the program does not accept your input. Say what you want about anti-virus programs, but avast & Kaspersky at least accept the settings that you put in.

On my old laptop I haven't had an anti-virus program in ages, and the system is still running smooth. Anti-virus programs can help you, but don't rely too much on them. Make sure to backup all your important data regularly, so that in case things go wrong, you don't lose too much stuff. And again, make sure to learn how to configure settings and exclusions properly, so that the anti-virus doesn't mess with things that you don't want it to do, like cracked games.

On my main Windows 7 (desktop) system I put Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 (technical preview version), and on my secondary system with Windows 10 I installed avast Internet Security 2015. So far I can't complain about either of them.

Good luck !

This still works: http://games4theworld.bestgoo.com/t14717-how-to-remove-disable-ads-in-utorrent
Make sure to restart your µTorrent client after doing so. Also, you can hide things like the (left) sidebar to hide the "Plus" ad in the lower-left corner.
You technically don't need that sidebar anyway...
