Windows Vista to Windows 7/8.1?

Post by PlayerM on Fri 20 Jan 2017, 07:38

I just dug my very old HP laptop from years ago and I thought it would be a good old school game laptop. The thing is that it's running/came with Vista (bless my past self) and is very slow. Am I able to upgrade to a newer Windows operating system? And how would I?

Hello,

Welcome to the forum.
We have a complete range of Windows 7 versions here. Depending on your laptop, you can install it from a bootable drive (as long as it supports booting from USB) or burn to disc.
You will most likely have to run the 32-bit windows on that laptop (though check to make sure! You never know). If that system is 64-bit, you can get the Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit as well, if you prefer.
Other than that, there's not much to take in account. Other than the laptop's RAM. Note that a newer OS will require more RAM, this is especially true if you intend to run games, as system requirements will differ from OS to OS.

If you didn't want to go online with that laptop, and only use it for oldskool games, you may be better served with XP (we also have that). It takes a bit more work to get the latest updates for XP on there, since it was discontinued and you'll have to search manually for updates to install, but it's doable.
It may be easier for you in the long run, since there will be fewer compatibility issues between your OS and your hardware drivers, and your OS and your games, depending on the types of games your going to install on it.
