Smaller sims 4 patches.

Post by anadius1 on Fri 12 Jan 2018, 00:07

I made a Python 3 script that compares two directories and makes a patch using xdelta3.
Apparently I can't even attach 8KB file so here's Dropbox url:
https://goo.gl/UtzThx

Usage:

Code:
python make-patch.py <old game dir> <updated game dir or patch dir> <dir where smaller patch is created>

How does it work?

First it compares all files in first and second dir and sorts them into two categories: new files and updated files.
Note: "Game" dir and all subtitle files are always treated as a new file.

New files are simply packed with 7-zip command line tool (7za).
Updated files are ran through xdelta3 - that results in much smaller file.

It is all packed into "__patch_<old version>-<new version>" directory together with batch file to make patching simple.

How to use patch?

Move "__patch_<old version>-<new version>" to main directory of a game, open it and run "patch.bat". If your game is in "Program Files" you most probably need to run it as administrator. It automatically removes old "Game" dir.

External programs used:

listed in README.txt

Testing:

I downloaded "The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs v1.36.102.1020" from thepiratebay (not G4TW torrent) and then I saw updates 1.36.104.1020 and 1.37.35.1010 so I decided to write this script and test it a bit.

Extracted patches to "TS4_Update_1-36-104-1020" and "TS4_Update_1-37-35-1010".
Extracted game twice to "TS4" and "TS4_manual".

Applied 1.37.35.1010 patch to "TS4_manual" (removed "Game" dir and copied files from "TS4_Update_1-37-35-1010").

Created 1.36.102.1020->1.36.104.1020 patch from "TS4" and "TS4_Update_1-36-104-1020".
Applied that patch to "TS4".
Created 1.36.104.1020->1.37.35.1010 patch from "TS4" and "TS4_Update_1-37-35-1010".
Applied that patch to "TS4".

Files in "TS4" and "TS4_manual" were identical.

Filesizes:

(I zipped mini-patches folders with no compression)

TS4_Update_1-36-104-1020.rar1,07 GB
TS4_Update_1-37-35-1010.rar3,10 GB
__patch_1.36.102.1020-1.36.104.1020.zip87 MB
__patch_1.36.104.1020-1.37.35.1010.zip217 MB

Conclusion:

This tool can create much smaller patches at a cost of compatibility. Your game version must be the same as one from patch. That shouldn't be hard to achieve since you need to install all DLCs anyway and there are not that many patches available. If something goes wrong and you run a patch that's not for your version it will fail and tell you to download full patch. Which is a bit downside because you'd have to host both small patch and full patch.

//MOVED

Hello and thanks for the submission!

It's been moved to The Sims 4 tips & tricks. I'm also aware of these xdelta-patches from other sources. Have tried them myself over and over, but they never work(ed) for me; I always got an error that one (1) file "could not be patched - patcher will therefore abort now". Never managed to figure out what the problem was with those, but yes. It seems it works for most other people though.

About this here:

That is a shortcoming of the Forum software used by Forumotion, and we have no influence on that. Forumotion can be contacted through their own Forum here:

With this tool you can create your own mini-patches. As long as someone installs the game from this site (or from other source + apply one full patch from here) they should be able to use them. You can try it yourself. Install all DLCs and full 1.36.104.1020 patch. And then apply my mini-patch __patch_1.36.104.1020-1.37.35.1010.zip from here: https://goo.gl/KC3VC1
