Need help building my computer.

Post by simz2lova on Fri 18 May 2012, 09:42

Hi guys, I've been doing some research lately and found, for what I need/want I should build my own computer. I watched a few youtube videos about it, mostly from newegg, and I went to their website. They have the DIY combos that I'm interested in because it takes the guess work out of it.
Well, i was wondering do you recommend any of them. If not can you give me a list or something? I'm not a HARDCORE gamer, but I KNOW I need a lot of memory. Its going to be for 3 people and it will have The Sims 2 and 3 with their expansion and stuff packs, plus other games, music, and pictures blah blah blah. I really just want to play the Sims 3 on high everything and it not be so slow and laggy.
Ok this is long. I'll stop now Smile I just really need some help with all of this!

Hello,

You don't need a lot of RAM for The Sims 3, it's a 32-bit application so it can't use more than 3,7GB RAM.
I think what you need to do is grab your most demanding game and see what it needs to run comfortably. If you pick components that match the recommended system specs for your most demanding game, you know what you need.
You could then choose to built the pc according to those specs, or kick it up a notch if that doesn't cost much more to be a little more prepared for the future.

That's what I'm going to do anyway, if I get to save the money to build it lol.
If you have a lot of media, you may want to think big on the HD. Admin told me 1-1,5 TB should be enough but considering that my 1TB external HD has been filled 50% and I'm also using almost 300gb of my internal HD, I think I'm going for a 2TB HD.

Yeah, I was going to go with a 1.5-2 TB HD because i have a LOT of stuff! The thing is The Sims 3 IS my most demanding game right now! lmao But what I'll do is go to a game store and look at a game I've been wanting to play and go by that.

Hello,

Yup, that's probably a good idea. You don't need a lot to play The Sims 3 on the best quality settings and have a good performance, but it's a good idea to plan ahead.
I'm on a seriously outdated pc myself, barely meeting TS3 specs. I'm going by Skyrim's requirements when I start to build my new pc.

I know I need to plan ahead and not just think about what I need right now. I was looking at that game. It looks like a good one.

Hello,

I've avoided any video's or reviews of Skyrim because I know it will be and I want to experience it all myself lol. I also loved previous titles in the Elder Scrolls series, so far the only games I wouldn't download off TPB.
Once you know what you need, and what you want to spend, you can look at different (web)shops to find the best deals on the hardware you want.

Depends on how much you wish to spend, my PC cost me £700 to build.

i5-2500k Overclocked to 4.7GHZ

16GB DDR3 RAM (overkill, but for £8 per stick, I couldnt say no)

p8p67 pro Motherboard

2x Nvidia 550Ti SLI

And 600GB Velociraptor HDD as primary, and 500GB WD Blue HDD for my movies and game ISO's

It Ran Sims 3 With ease all on high, but I uninstalled it a while back, tried reinstalling the games and forgotten how to crack it all, but I know it works well with ease!

Hi there,

It's not bad to spend a little bit more for quality RAM.
Bad RAM can cause a lot of nasty problems. (E.g. Blue Screen of Death)

Computer Technician is my trade, so I get parts at a cheap price Very Happy

The RAM is PNY 1333MHz so it's not the best, but you'll hardly notice the difference between that and corsair 1666mhz. It's only when you reach the 2000mhz youll feel the difference
