Will the number of expansions affect the performance?

Post by im_not_amish on Fri 20 Jul 2012, 20:01

A couple weeks ago I downloaded all the stuff packs and expansions, installed them all and I got the dreaded "The Sims 3 has stopped working" message and then crash to desktop. I tried everything using the suggestions on this site and nothing worked. I got frustrated, uninstalled everything and said screw it. But i really wanted to play the Sims so I downloaded it again. I've played the base Sims 3 without any issues so back to the thread title.

Will the number of expansions affect the performance?

If so will the stuff packs carry less of a burden than the expansions on my laptop?

Hello,

It largely depends on your computer if packs affect performance or not. You shouldn't expect a hit in performance at all if your laptop is high-end.
Game crashes can be caused by a variety of issues though, you can find a number of possible solutions here, and on a laptop you could also think about issues with overheating. If your laptop has trouble staying cool, for example depending on the surface it's on, you can expect crashes.

Thank you so much for responding.

How can I know if its just my computer being too low end or overheating?

It does get pretty hot when i play.

Hello,

You can find out here if your laptop is high or low end.

It says FAST for the Sims 3 and every expansion.

So my computer should be able to handle everything correct?

Hello,

Yes, it should.
What kind of surface are you using it on?

It's usually just my wooden desk.

The problem is still there. "The sims 3 has stopped working"

The crash log analyzer said "Insufficient memory installed - upgrade your computer to have 4+ GiB of memory"

I just checked my RAM though and i have 6 gb

Hello,

That's why I doubt that's it, I only have 1GB RAM myself and rarely experience crashes.
You could try to turn off background processes, something like Gamebooster could do it for you, but I'm not sure it would make much, if any difference.
You could lower the graphics setting a little though, if they're on high, try them on medium. It's not that different to look at, but it makes a difference in FPS rate, which in turn keeps your graphicscard cooler.
Also, see if it's at all possible to keep your laptop cool, try placing it on something so that there's a little room under it. There are even cooling pads available to place a laptop on.

My graphics are at default except that I made the resolution 16:9.

I just used bottle caps to lift my laptop above my desk.

I really do think overheating is the problem. The bottom gets really hot.
