Having Trouble Downloading Torrents

Post by Mugglrz on Sun 18 Nov 2012, 17:04

I've had the Sims 3 expansions downloading in Vuze for a day and they are all still under 0.5% percent. Is there something I should be doing differently? Using a different program? Should I pause all but 1 torrent and would that help? All assistance is appreciated!

Hello,

If you have a slow internet connection, yes, it's recommended to have one download at a time running.
Also, we highly recommend using µTorrent - www.utorrent.com .

Does it report a issue with your network connection? With utorrent lower right corner of the program is a normally a icon (not showing up for me atm, not sure why.) might be one left of it, just click on it, and it shows some network settings, "utorrent Speed Test" and then run test, and let us know what the results are.

Or have you download other torrents with Vuze recently and didn't have a problem?

Do you have a router and/or a firewall?

If so, you need to open the TCP and UDP ports at both (port forwarder at your router).

Also, your Internet Service Provider may be blocking torrents, sometimes going to the options of utorrent and selecting the option that forces encryption may be very helpful and fix the problem. There are a few nice tutorials that show you how to open those doors at your firewall and create the port forwarders you may be in need to, besides the encryption on utorrent.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Yeah at the bottom right corner it says:

Not Connectable
A firewall/router is limiting your network traffic. You need to open up a port so that others can connect to you.

If you could help me open these ports and lower my firewall restrictions and link me to that tutorial you are talking about I would be really thankful!

Well I think he meant there are a few around.

I'm not sure how tech savvy you are, so having to figure out one that explains well, and is simple.

So first off let start with a article about what port forwarding means "A simple port forwarding guide" explains the details fairly nicely. Was hoping it provided some details on how to but sadly doesn't.

So next lets a guide that does the steps on how to. http://www.utorrent.com/help/guides/connection-setup

But first you actually need to know what port is being used in your torrent client.

For utorrent I'll do a little step-by-step guide.

1. With utorrent open, go to options -> Preferences (shortcut: Ctrl+P)
2. Left side list, click on Connection. (4th one down for me.)
3. Top of the page under Listening Port has the "Port used for incoming connections:" And the port in the box is the one your should open up.

Also, make sure the checkbox for "Randomize port each start" is un-checked, don't want to have to figure out why you can't download again.

If you need anymore help with this, let us know.

What he said.

Thanks a lot, t2sink!

I would just like to remember that besides the port forwarding, it may be necessary to open the ports at your firewall, in case you have one, too.

That would depend on the firewall is being used so, Mugglrz, can you let us know which software you use for firewall?

Thank you very much! I found what you are talking about but under step 3 I don't understand what you mean.

Also I am using Windows 7 Firewall. I checked and it says that uTorrent and Vuze are not blocked by firewall.

I tried fooling around with ports on both Vuze and uTorrent and I really don't get what they mean and all of my downloads are stopped now. Sad Is there a really good port I can just pick and use or do I have to figure out what port I have to use? Thanks for the help!

No port is better then another for the most part, all do the same. Just need to figure out if one is already opened or not also.

I like this site to check for open ports. http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

So go to your torrent client, open the page for ports, goto the website, and paste the port into the Port Box, it should be your IP in the other box, if not click on use current IP, then hit Check.

It will either display open or closed, which I'm guessing it will display closed,

You would have to change the port your torrent client uses each time for that tho.

You had it working before tho right? Any idea what that port was?

What's your router model? Do you have the password to open its configurations? You need to select one port number at your torrent client, and create the udp and tcp forwarders directly to your machine, at your router setup... I feel that's the major issue, since utorrent usually opens the needed ports at windows firewall.
