Hello

Post by hexorcist on Tue 27 Nov 2012, 00:37

Hello everyone.

A lot of the fixes in the Sims 3 forums have helped me quite a bit to get Sims 3 going again after my recent transition from Win7 to Win8 and I figured I'd create an account to say thanks, and eventually give back to the community. I am a software developer, currently working on a project that will allow people to (easily) fix registry issues related to Sims 3 installs. I am also a modder, working mostly with games that were not meant to be modded (Fable III, Mass Effect series, etc) but also doing some work with games that welcomed modding (Elder Scrolls series, etc). So, hello to you all Smile

Hello and welcome to our forum!

So you're a modder, that's interesting. Did you ever do any modding for The Sims 3?
I'm more of a mod-enthusiast myself Laughing I use a number of mods for the Sims 3. I have a lot of mods for Oblivion and MorrowinD. Unfortunately I play Skyrim on the Xbox, I'm sure that in time there will be a lot of interesting mods available for Skyrim.
I'm also interested to hear more about your project.

I'd like to say "don't hesitate to post if you need any help" but you seem to be quite knowledgeable. Feel free to post if you think you can help solve a problem.
And have fun!

Hey, thanks!

I haven't done anything for Sims 3, yet. I actually just started playing it within the last month - always thought I'd be bored with it, and I was wrong. From what I've read, mods can be developed in C# and that is a language I am fluent in.

As for my current project, it's complete for the most part. I just want to try and figure some things out before I toss it out to the world. Essentially, because I had just installed Win8 I didn't have the registry keys. I didn't want to reinstall all the games (I hate reinstalling any game - which is why I keep a 1TB drive dedicated to game installs) and I didn't have my previous registry hive. Quite a few issues are caused by, and can be fixed by the keys in the registry. One such issue is "Version 0.0.0.0" in the launcher. In my case it was because the CD key for the base game was missing [thank you ProcMon!]. You don't need the keys for the expansions, but the game does check if the base game's key is there (unsure if it does any checking on the key for validity).

It does have default values for everything except the CD key, and everything Sims3+expansion related in the registry can be modified using it. It will import current values from the registry by clicking a button. There are two ways to save the information put in - saving it to the registry or exporting a .reg file that you can modify and import at your leisure. If you like I can post it on dropfile and send you a message with the URL if you'd like to see it in its current state [I could release it as-is, I'm just nitpicky on some small details].
