Is it okay if I move all Electronic Arts folder to another Hard Disk?

Post by DanishQweex on Thu 06 Dec 2012, 17:42

Hello,

I just want to ask, is it okay if I move my Electronic Arts folder form Hard Disk 'C' to Hard Disk 'D'? I wanted to move it cause I want to make my Hard Disk 'C' contain more space. See, the Electronic Arts(that contain The Sims 3 games) is so bigger. It takes 10 GB space. So, i just wanted to move it to my Hard Disk 'D' that has bigger space than the 'C'. My laptop is in Windows 7. I got the Base Game(must have it), Ambitions and Town Life Stuff. So, is it okay or it may cause me some problems if I moved it?

Moving folders will causes issues and make you unable to play your game unless it's fixed in the registry, so a easier way would just be to uninistall+reinstall just so you don't run into a issue of the registry not being changed correctly.

So did you partition C/D Drives, or is D a external harddrive? Since you could also just shrink D and add more back to C. (Might have to do a disk defragment prior to clear up D before Shrinking. Recommend to use Defraggler if you want to go this way.)

Hmm, it seem so complicated. And I just wanted to ask if its okay to move the folder. But you say if I move the folder, I might be unable to play my game. So, I think I wouldnt taking the risk. But, thank you for giving me such a great answer. Its helpful. And, Thanks again. Very Happy

Hello,

You'll definitely be unable to play the game if you moved the folders like that. If you uninstall your games, and reinstall them on your other drive, you'll be fine though. As long as you don't forget to restart your system after uninstalling.

You won't be unable to play, but you will need to fix some things before you're able to play again. What you would have to do is fix the registry entries that point to the old locations. There are two, specifically, for each installation. The "Install Dir" and the "ExePath". If you're uncomfortable poking around in the registry you can do it with a few mouse clicks using my tool found here: http://games4theworld.bestgoo.com/t8929-registry-helper

If you use my tool, the things you'll need to fix will show up in red (just like they do in the screenshot). Just click the "Browse" button beside them and navigate to the new locations. If you do the "Install Dir" first, the "ExePath" should automatically update to reflect the new location.

You could even copy them to another computer if you wanted, and the game would run as if it had been installed on that computer the whole time if you set the registry values Smile
