Sims 3 crashing

Post by jatyro91 on Sat 29 Dec 2012, 23:53

I have the Sims 3 and all the expansions installed. I loaded up the game and everything was working out fine. I got into Create a Family or CAS, whichever you want to call it, and while I was picking out his clothes the game just went black then closed. This happened twice, and I haven't touched it since. There was no error message or anything. It just simply took me to my desktop and the icon disappeared as if I had closed it normally.

EDIT: Just wanted to give the rest of the details. I installed following "How to install Sims 3 with or without EP's on Mac + DMG creating" guide. My base game is from RELOADED, my expansions are from G4TW and I used the ultimate crack.

UPDATE: I finally got through the CAS process and moved into a town. Now, I can't save. I get "Error code 12". Also, after my attempt at saving, the colors began to get messed up. Different images on the toolbar at the bottom (edit town, live mode, buy/build mode, mood bar, etc) turned white and black. My sims portrait became a half red half white (cut down diagonally), and then the entire screen turned white and red. I even tried Save As and named it something new, that didn't work either.

Hey jatyro,

Do you have enough memory to play the game? Error code 12 is a memory issue. It helps to not have any background applications running while playing the game.

Consult this post:
http://sims3.crinrict.com/en/2011/03/error-save-errors-error-12-13-or-16.html

Also, clearing your caches never hurt:

I don't have anything else running while playing, and as far as memory goes, I have 4 GB of RAM. And storage wise I have over 500gb unused.

Clearing Cache didn't do anything either.

When did you start getting this error?

Do you have any mods/CC?

I installed the Sims 3 and all EP and Stuff packs the same day. So I've gotten this error as soon as I finally made it through CAS. I have a couple CC items from Around The Sims 3, but my girlfriend (who's also running off of mac and running the G4TW versions) has the same items.

Try running the game without the third party CC and see if you get the same crash.

(Rename your /Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 folder and play the purely vanilla game. If it still crashes in CAS, at least we'll know it's not the CC that is conflicting with it.)

I got through CAS this time, just like last time but still got the discoloration errors and the error 12 while saving.

//EDIT

Also, not sure if this is worth mentioning or not, but my Sims 3 icons
are circular like most of my mac icons, except world adventures. World
adventures is still a square. Is this normal?

I don't think anything's wrong with WA.

Actually, antiskub do you think he may have to clean out some things in the cache and preferences for the Library file? I'm just wondering if that could be causing a memory error. I know he's had to unistall and reinstall multiple times.

Hmmm....how did I know that? Razz *cought* read his other post *cought* *cought*

Yes the WA icon is supposed to be square.

Hm. This seems more and more like the basic Sims 3 Seasons problem that we had with Macs. But, you're saying it works perfectly well on your girlfriend's machine?

Do you guys have the same model? Run the same OS X version? Have the same graphics card? Same amount of RAM?

For temporary fixes, consult my post in this thread:

My computer is slightly better than hers, but not by much. And we found out last night, hers isn't working perfectly anymore, lol. At first it was fine, but for the first time last night she got the Error 12 while trying to save. So it seems like it is Seasons, because hers ran fine before I added that one (added seasons to hers after installing them all on mine). We will try the temp fixes and let you know how it goes. If it is Seasons, is there a perma fix?

No permanent fix that I've heard of.

We're talking about EA here so I doubt they'll actually do anything at all to address the issue... until the year 2014.

I'm having the same type of issues - although I think mine started with supernatural. My game is constantly crashing as soon as I go into CAS (it either just crashes or I get black skins or clothing items go all wonky with lines in the thumbnails etc). I also experience crashing in game when I go to use something that came with seasons, like get a snow cone or take a postcard picture etc. I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice now, running without ANY custom or downloaded crap - other than expansions. I have G4TW expansions and RELOADED expansions, wondering if there might be some compatibility issues or just corrupt downloads??? I'm going to try re-installing once again, run with bare minimum, apply the fix and the manual patch - going to see if this helps. Sad

Heya bransko,

If you're going to reinstall, follow this helpful guide on clearing preferences/doing a clean install:

Let us know how it goes!

So I think you may need to uninstall and reinstall. I'll tell you exactly what I did. I know it works (even though I was freeze central yesterday...I may just uninstall Pets as well as Seasons and wait to get my shiny new laptop and iMac with more RAM bwahahaha).

Back to you! So I installed the reloaded base game, ran the Manual Patch, installed all EPs, ran the Manual Patch again (important), and then used the #crack in the Ultimate Fix.

Do you think that would work for you?

I removed seasons and everything seems to be fine now. I guess my laptop couldn't handle it. Guess when I want to play with seasons I'll just use my pc. Thanks for all your help!

@bransko
Consult this for detailed installation instructions:

It's not your laptop; it's EA not bothering to even tweak their cider program!

Re: Sims 3 crashing

Post by bransko1982 on Sun 27 Jan 2013, 23:57

So, I've Done as instructed. Uninstalled everything again.
Installed base game - manually patched - then installed and updated each expansion one at a time (up to Supernatural)
This seemed to be the answer - manually patching right after the base game.
Game is working just fine as it is now, its not crashing as of yet - no custom content, no store content, nothing.
I am going to try it a few more times, to see if it keeps it up.
Slowly, i'll add some store content like worlds etc and some other store update stuff from G4TW, I'll try seasons again too to see if that's my problem.
Will keep posted
Thanks for the tips all!

//EDIT

Okay, so here's my update - I've got all games up to Seasons installed -
no store content, no cc, nothing else. My game is working great.
Prior,
I had tried installing some store content (all downloaded from G4tW
media fire account online, all the store updates and towns etc)
something in those downloads is what was causing my issues, so something
in there is corrupt.
Once it gets installed and causes problems,
there is no getting it out - i have to uninstall and re install all the
games again
I
don't know if it's worth my time and effort to weed out what files are
doing this - but I will try, slowly - I just cant play this game without
cc Sad

Admin edit: Please use the "Edit" button to update your existing post, thank you!

- ADMIN

March 5th - Nope, I installed a package file and problem is back
Tried to update and applied new fix - still no go
Once the problem is there, uninstalling all cc does nothing Sad
